Je est un monstre : atelier d’écriture

Literature and Evil go all the way back. Why is it so? What are writers after when they write about acts and individuals that cannot be accepted by a healthy society? Is a good writer supposed to function above right and wrong? Should the willing suspension of moral judgment be expected of a good reader?

In this course, we will attempt to understand how far literature can push identification with the figure of the monster: not the natural-born villain or the colloquial bad guy whose structural purpose is to restore order by getting defeated by the hero, but the ordinary Joe that life turns into an inhuman character. We will study this process and the” voice” of Evil in French poetry, novels and nonfiction.

Students will be invited to analyze sample texts before creating their own in the different genres. The course will include discussions with contemporary French authors.
